The World Cup Starts Thursday: Everything You Need to Know
This is it. The tournament we've been counting down to for the better part of a year kicks off this Thursday, June 11, 2026. The 2026 FIFA World Cup is the biggest sporting event ever held on this continent, and over the next 39 days it will captivate every sports fan in North America and billions around the world. Whether you've been planning your watch schedule for months or you're just now realizing this thing is about to happen, this is your final briefing.
The Format in 30 Seconds
48 teams. 12 groups of 4. Top 2 from each group advance, plus the 8 best third-place finishers. That gets us to a Round of 32 (new!), then Round of 16, quarterfinals, semifinals, and the final on July 19. The group stage runs June 11–27. The knockouts begin June 28. Seven matches total for any team that reaches the final.
The Opening Match
Thursday, June 11 features the tournament's opening match. Schedule your day around it. Tell your boss now. Whatever you have to do on Thursday afternoon, cancel it. Opening matches of a World Cup are the kind of moment you'll remember where you were — don't be stuck in a meeting when the first whistle blows.
The Matches You Absolutely Cannot Miss
- The opening match (June 11) — tournament kickoff, massive spectacle
- USA vs Paraguay (June 12) — the host nation's opening game at SoFi Stadium
- Canada's home opener (June 12) — emotional moment for Canadian football
- The "group of death" opener — whichever group lands two favorites will be must-watch from the first whistle
- Argentina's opener — defending champions, Messi's likely final tournament, pure drama
- Round of 32 matches (June 28–30) — the new knockout round, a whole fresh layer of stakes
- Quarterfinals onward — obviously
Your Watch Schedule Survival Guide
The group stage will serve up multiple matches a day across different time zones. You cannot watch all of them. Here's the rule: pick one priority match per day and commit to it. Have a second match you'll half-watch in the background. Anything beyond that is bonus. If you try to give full attention to every match, you'll burn out before the knockouts begin.
Where to Watch
If you haven't picked your watch bar yet, do it in the next 48 hours. Our bar directory has every venue filtered by city, amenities, team support, and whether they're hosting official watch parties. Reserve a seat for Thursday's opening match NOW. The best bars in every host city will be at capacity. Call ahead. Don't assume you can walk in.
Stay Hydrated, Literally
A World Cup is a marathon. Seven weeks. Dozens of matches. Early starts for European kickoffs. Late nights for knockout drama. Pace yourself. Eat real food. Drink water between beers. Sleep when you can. The people who have the best tournament experiences are the ones who make it all the way to the final still enjoying themselves — not the ones who burn out by the Round of 16.
Small Things That Make the Experience Better
- Pick a team to support that isn't your country. It makes every match more fun.
- Learn five player names per team for the teams in your "must-watch" groups. You'll enjoy the match 10× more.
- Watch the national anthems. Every single time. It's the best moment.
- Tip your bartenders well. They're working long shifts. The good ones are letting you have the best seat — reward them.
- Take photos, but not videos. Be present. You'll remember this tournament for the rest of your life.
